POST 5: Mirror, mirror on the wall… who is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom?

Entrevista a Jorge Oteiza

► Here is the problem with DIY. You unpack all the pieces, extend the sketch as though it was worthwhile and two hours after, (completely out of your mind turning the allen wrench) you realize that your monstrosity lacks coherence, cohesion and you still have some pieces left over which have taken over your hours of sleep.
Well, something similar happens when writing. Particularly when one does it from inside, from the emotional rollercoaster of being a narrator and character at the same time.
Because when I talk about women, whether Afghan, Korean, Ethiopian, Bengali or irrespective of where they come from, I can't expect to stand by and do nothing without feeling a sting of empathy and wondering what my life would have been like if I'd been born elsewhere.

Therefore, I've decided to dedicate this post to worship and cult of beauty, an issue of general concern that, to some extent affects all of us.
To handle this complex issue, I've considered the current social situation of South Korea as reference, where the frenzy for surgery and obsession with the body have been taken to extreme.
To confirm that this isn't marginal thinking of misconception but a collective problem, I've been able to count on the help of S.Y. a good friend who is half-Korean and half Basque.

Nowadays, the chimera of the ideal woman is favored and exploited by pervasive industry which moves billions of dollars a year, hungry for new hosts, men and women, which allows it to continue increasing its already growing income.
While it's true that historically there were powerful men who were responsible for exalting the archetype of perfect beauty creating sex symbols adapted to each society and moment, there were women who in their attempt to please men and to achieve a superior status, have collaborated actively in pursuit of a collective awareness for perfectionism through an unattainable delusion.
The worship obsession is said to be a common symptom of advanced societies, and by advanced I mean capitalists in this case, specialists at turning the basic human needs into capital, vultures of opportunity and even its most archaic and reactionary ranks in which is held a part of this system, succeeded in escaping to artifice.
It appears that "man is a divine creation" but only as a part of sunday sermon.

In the 21st century, South Korea is shown as one of the twelve strongest economies in the world.
The country is already controlled by multinational corporations, which have contributed to what is known as "The miracle of Han river" which refers to economic development experienced by the country in just over forty years. In contrast to the educational shortcomings that characterised (and unfortunately characterise again) the Spanish system, South Korea directed all its efforts towards education, which explains its later achievements in technological advances and production and its supremacy as one of the primary manufacturers specializing in boats and automobiles throughout the wold. But as there is no Yin without Yang, the rapid growth for a short period has dragged along with it a society deeply rooted in confucian tradition, driving it towards unbridled consumerism.
The confucian doctrine was designed for a society and economy based on agriculture, offering a philosophy of life accordingly.
It had high ethical standard regarding the common good, the value of the family, the spirit of mankind and hard work, which helped to move the country forward in a short period of time.
But at the same time, this doctrine promoted family state and degraded women through its sexist point of view, understanding her as the irrational part of the relationship being subordinated to the male figure, only necessary for housekeeping and the balance of life.
Again I quote the words of Jorge Oteiza (was Basque sculptor, painter, designer and writer) to remember those prophetic words about capitalism. "Today's culture, call it American or what you will, is the culture of destruction. The most serious consequence is that it destroys the four men inside each one of us".

Interview with Oteiza

And that's why despite its positive economic growth, South Korea is suffocated. Artificial. It's unable to realize that it's running away from its own identity.
Society has failed to keep the balance about such commercial waves taking distance from its real ideals.
However, even though they're not able to find themselves, the flock is considered to be alive.
Fortunately, some critical minds are beginning to realize that the bubble could be near bursting.
Making a critical assessment, it's not difficult to understand that to this consumerist fever, it has joined the narcissistic as well, on which the harpies of the cosmetic industry has hooked its claws.
The mirror syndrome in South Korea is a trendy disorder. It's a problem that threatens most of its populations, hiding behind itself unhappiness and much unnecessary suffering.
According to the OCDE, suicide rates among adolescent women are increasing dramatically up to 57,2% in the last ten years because beauty in addition to being ephemeral, tends to cause dissatisfaction, frustration and ostracism. The obsession with one's physical appearance leads women to quest for eternal fantasy, as disturbing as it is unhealthy.
According to my friend S.Y., Korea became so heavily involved in education that at the moment there is an extraordinary amount of overqualified youth. Children go to classes for up to eleven hours a day, while a major part of youth hold university degrees, speak several languages fluently, have extensive knowledge about music and are skilled at many sports.
Competition is so fierce that beauty has become in an added value the curricular lines, login with one of the keys to success professionally.
However, although it has an excellent educational system, expenditure on education is pretty low so it is the  families themselves who go into in order to cover expenses do to their fear of their children having to face discrimination for being in a weaker position.
Furthermore, as a vestige of confucianism, parents remain concerned about the kind of husband that their daughters would be allowed to marry.
It's strange that after this new scene, in which women can access education and the necessary tools to be self-sufficient, to the point of forcing them to have unnecessary surgical procedures.

Kisaeng 기생” was the name given to the triptych dedicated to S.Y. in which she poses emulating one of the Korean traditional women dedicated to the legal entertainments of Government and State.
Thanks to the fact that many Kisaeng were well-educated and had a certain level of knowledge, some of them managed to be recognized and had an important role to play in the successive dynasties, in spite of being perceived as lower status than most people.
For this reason, I've used her symbolic image as perfect woman for the Korean society (cultured, beautiful, and submissive).
The other pieces share the same visual code, introducing "a reinvented woman" without distinctive racial features and neither identity, merely concern over offering herself to the world.

Through the digital treatment of images and the photomontage characteristics of cosmetics and fashion advertising, I emphasize about underlying violence of these campaigns whose purposes are clearly commercial and not for the good of our bodily health as they would have us to believe.
Their real objective is that women don't accept themselves and however, feel liberated, through the image and the new malleability of their bodies.
It seeks the representation of sex symbol through the perverse but also persecutes ideal beauty, between the old and new canon much more westernized.
Blue big eyes, well defined straight nose, feminized chin...
A surgery race which young girls undergo from high school encouraged by their own parents.
Moreover, after the Korean War, people were left with the sense of eternal gratitude and admiration for EE.UU that gave military support to the region in its struggle for global supremacy.
Perhaps this "basic kit" of surgeries is just a search of harmony as S.Y. says but from the outside, it looks as they were trying to look more western due to the strong influence of EE.UU and, as such, they experience a sense of shame and rejection towards their own.
A good example is the beauty contest "Miss Korea 2013" much criticized by international press, given that all contestants were so operated that they all looked like the same person. Chilling.

Miss Korea 2013

The most popular  interventions among Koreans who undergo surgery are blepharoplasty which enhances the appearance of eyelids and widens the eye, maxillofacial surgery for refining the jaw, rhinoplasty for raising the nasal septum and the smile lips for having an everlasting smile.
A visual poetics is drawn where the image of the original ego is overshadowed by the canonical model imposed by an oppressive culture and society.

► This composition represents "The miracle on the Han river"
한강의기적 which crosses Seoul and makes reference to the speed at which the country was developed between 1953-1996.
In this way, the spectator is allowed to speculate about the social and political issues behind this aesthetic matter.
As a result of this economic boom, there was a second outbreak that brought this new media-satured perfect body conception so that again, people swim against the tide frustrating developments towards a more equal and inclusive society by one in which plastic and impersonal persons are imposed on. Those who still hope that a society in which personal and professional growth is possible, those who dream of achieving a free and balanced society will have to wait for a little longer.
The insatiable whirlpool  formed in the river, spreads the dream and ideals of my washed-out Kisaeng who remain undeterred in an infinite pose for not losing her composure.
It's expected for a Korean woman to be beautiful but decent, well educated-but moderate, strong but submissive, emotionally mature but endowed with a youthful and innocent appearance. No, gentlemen. There is no body or psyche that resist it. Particularly when nowadays, women have the essential tools to be self-sufficient and get rid of this tyranny once and for all.

►This triptych doesn't incentive the change itself or the subversion of the stablished canons, quite the contrary. Women here is represented offering herself to the world while regretting simultaneously, become aware that if was formerly not free, today even less. The aggressive capitalist influence, has resulted in the loss of one's identity in pursuing economic growth and technological development, converting people into goods without a conscience, which reminds them who they are and where they want go.
For this reason an alienated nation can never be free and neither a woman afraid of showing herself as she is, with her strengths and weaknesses.

✽ My sincere thanks to S.Y. for providing me with documentation to pass along this post. I would also like to thank her for the example she preaches, being as genuine as she is, in all aspects, every day of the year.

As friend, woman, and person.
