POST 3: India 2009: Don’t worry…chicken curry.

Return airline tickets: Bilbao – Heathrow          /      Heathrow – New Delhi
Precios: 89,99 euros (Vueling)                             /      559 euros (Air India) Govolo
Distancia y duración: 926km    1h50min           /      6718km     15h 14min (1 escala)

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
T his is the story unlike any other. A STORY capable of sweeping away its own letters.
Those that sometimes force you to a diagonal reading to filter content in order not to fully experience everithing.
Those that require you to wrap up the chest not to end up frozen to death and in perpetual mourning, confirming once again that nothing remains and that sometimes written endings are not always as fair as they should be.
I remember that before I left, I bought a glossy booklet with a leather case that I thought I would use as a logbook.
I figured that I would have a lot to tell the world upon my return, however, after almost five years it remains in blank.
Now I understand when Oteiza said "My only hapiness is a blank sheet" because the fact is that there is a little comfort space bigger than that.
I truly believe that nothing nor nobody has even got close to leaving me with so little to say as India did.
But it will be better to start from the beginning, with an introduction and a more sumptuous and evocative narrative, ie, neither rhyme nor reason, as I like:

A self-respecting young girl, always crosses the threshold of the door with a firm step. "Sticking out the chest and bum and sucking in the belly" a friend advised me once.
Although after downing one steep, she dropped precipitously to the sea level, acquiring a new dimension for her wise words.
If something was always right my crafty father, was in the fact that how difficult it is to be handsome, tall, blond and blue-eyed twenty four hours a day.
So, when the time has come, there is no choice but to remove the mask once and for all leaving behind the years of thankless stupidity in order to yell your real self to the dammed mirror.
To your great surprise, it returns you an honest smile without interests, with some occasional glitter, a loud laugh and a coorresponding bit of darkness. Nothing serious.
Passing over that point, it's not difficult to feel a bit more freedom, that although never entirely free, at least able to pass the baton on time for someone else to carry their own penance.
As free as stardust, after a toast, a collection of friendly hugs and a kiss.
And around 9:00 am I was there, in "The Pidgeon" airport of Calatrava (whom other day that I feel motivated I'll devote some obscure words), with an accelerated heart and two tickets in hand that read:

Return airline tickets: Bilbao – Heathrow         /      Heathrow – New Delhi
Prices: 89,99 euros (Vueling)                              /      559 euros (Air India) Govolo
Distance and duration: 926km    1h50min      /      6718km     15h 14min (1 stopover)

1.Follow the yellow brick road chick!: From New Delhi to Kolkata.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

lf the deep rooted Indian custom of removing their shoes on the plane and the hot chilly sauces didn't finish me off after a nine-hour flight, the slap of heat did me in once and for all.
Definitely, my arrival to New Delhi implied more than a dividing line between two worlds, proved to be the realization that there really exists an underworld...and I place God as witness that isn't in Mordor.
My first impression was of a chaotic, noisy, dirty and overcrowded city.
My second impression too.
In fact, I have to admit that I almost let the experience exceed me in just forty eight hours.
Because twenty two years of hedonistic life like mine, with more passion than pain and more fiction than reality, didn't help much.
Above all, the fact of being alone for the first time, so far from home, without any experience as a backpacker and without the security at the time of a fluent knowledge of the language.

India forces you to a tragic and painful introspection that we should all compel in at the very least once in our life, no matter how much it hurts and our eyes ache. "Humanization process" as they say.
For this reason, tears are solely attributable to people who can see instead of just look.
And it hurts because you, who believed in yourself so strongly, really feel so fragile being alone, immersed in the hoarseness of thousand of voices which aren't addressed to you, because you aren't the center of anything. Maybe your wallet, but not you.
It's then that the idea of "travelling" acquires its true meaning.
To travel is to stop along the way and not just reach the destination. This means to keep on growing in spite of yourself and not just on the outside.
Learning to listen and stop "duckspeaking" as Orwell defined in his novel 1984, to dialogue with yourself and with the world of sensations around you.
As a matter of improvisation, I left without some planning, and the word "nothing" in this case, has a literal meaning.
My only certainty was that my return flight back home wasn't until a month.

After my first night in a guest house in Paharganj (that for the common good I'll avoid describing), I tried to escape from the deafening blare of horns heading towards Chandni Chowk, but it was even further collapsed thanks to its street market than the tumultuous streets which I crossed to get there.
Despite mi numerous reservations about the food stalls, hunger however, soon pushed me to immerse myself in a world of fried food and exotic fruits where "pakoras" (a kind of fried vegetable) and mango lassis became my glory in mouthfuls.
My stomach however, seemed to be completely against it.
Here is the beginning of my great adventure entitled "latrines race".
As the sunset began, I stopped a taxi with the intention of migrating to my hideout.
Which was my surprise when I found in my hands a charge sheet, plasticized and designed by the driver.
I looked at his face and saw that he was smiling, so I realized that it was Skaife himself who dedicated me that piece of shit to bleed me dry five times the standard price, albeit with elegance and professionalism.
As you might imagine, this small discrepancy after fifteen minutes of fruitless debate and after realizing that smart cookie had looked me inside, ended up in one of those heated discussions in which one's face turned the color of an eggplant.
If I remember correctly, I dragged up all my arsenal of dark words aquired in Hackney, my old neighborhood in London until he gave in to place the "miter" (taximeter) and set off.
Or so I thought when after five minutes, Skaife picked up a local troop which got into the car in order to make the most of the ride.

2.We’re not in Kansas anymore: Welcome to Kolkata

- Lady, have you ever been in Kolkata? Do you have any idea what Kolkata is like?

One way airline ticket: Delhi – Kolkata
Precio: RS 4160/ 49,48 euros aprox.  (Air India)
Distancia y duración: 1500km aprox. 2h 20min

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

- Lady, have you ever been to Kolkata? Do you have any idea what Kolkata is like?

Actually, I knew more or less what is said in the books and documentaries.
Calcutta was for a long period the capital of the Raj and the jewel of the British Empire behind London, so what was drawn in my mind were majestic colonial buildings and emerging financial areas that exhaled an air of greatness and pride which were conflicting with the references to the enormous poverty in a great extent of the subcontinent.

One way airline ticket: Delhi – Kolkata
Price: RS 4160/ 49,48 euros approx.  (Air India)
Distance and duration: 1500km approx. 2h 20min

It was already dusk when I got my foot into the city after an arduous struggle with the airport mafia.
A taxi brought me to the fire station where I had met with Maria, an old school friend I had contacted a few days before leaving Bilbao.
For some strange reason, my phone decided to immolate itself that evening so I couldn't inform anyone of my arrival.
So I started walking down narrow and populated sidewalks of old men, women and children which were setting up with plastics their limited square meter of pavement to overnight, as if that constrained space was what all their possessions were reducted to.
Stray dogs for their part, seemed to be organized in small militias taking positions close to humans until an accurate stone discouraged them from their intentions.
I walked Sudder Street between plaintive howls and a chorus of voices imploring some rupees. I finally found a callshop where I met Inés (who was Maria's mate) and alongside the rest of the group which were engaged in voluntary activities which I joined inmediately.
That's why Calcutta has only two different ways to be digested.
One of them is ignore that sometime you were there and leave it to his fate as soon as possible so that nothing of what you see can touch you. The other way is to get involved and let your shield be shattered. Without beating around the bush.
Because even if you get there without any clear objective, perspective or merely by accident as I myself did, after getting over the initial shock, most people end up finding much more than they could have imagined.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

After the first days in Sudder Street, I started to feel more at home in Kolkata.
While I believe that I could never get used to that sweltering heat, latrines or local fauna which I shared a room without showing disgust, the city finally seduced me with its essence, because if India by itself is smelly, Kolkata intoxicates the senses.
The aroma of curry, wet walls and ardent skins.
Get up in the morning and traders wish you good morning, beggars and rickshaw porters greet you, the waiters at "Blue Sky" know even before you what you want for breakfast and your teammates, those people who were mere strangers a few days ago, will gradually become your new family.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

At this point, I had started to familiarize myself with some of their peculiar interests and praxis, as building impossible bamboo structures which through workers climb, the games of "Carrom" without quarter, or walks around the neighborhood with all kinds of pets such as snakes, monkeys...

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Unfortunately, I soon realized that minutes escaped out to the "City of Joy". Tic-tac-tic-tac....
It looked like a small voracious demon's guerrilla had been in its flaking walls feeding on it until leaving it in a decaying state.
Kolkata, full of cracks that sigh and leaks that weep for other times, grounding, witnessing the economic boom of other neighbouring cities.
In contrast, the city has a financial area that Hindus know by the name of BBD Bagh.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

For a mere esthete tourist, this place would be nothing short of a calamity, with the exception of the flaming Dalhousie Square and the buildings that flank it, which began to be rebuilt for the arrival of the new government.
The other outlying buildings seemed close to collapsing. Hundreds of climbing plants clambered over their walks expanding their ramifications at their will, while the pavement of the streets looked completely undone because of the invasion of organic material, the potholes and holes, not to mention the tangle of wires.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

But BBD Bagh is much more than the damaged vestiges of a colonial era, which for Hindus, represents a piece of history evoking the strife in which many of their combatants were killed in their determination to regain their freedom.
For this reason, we should look around this area with open mind and hunger to be taught.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Another side of the city can be found in the South Dumdum direction, located at the North of the city.
To get here. one of your options could well be the underground, which far from pouring oil on troubled waters after disputes with taxi drivers, confronts us with new experiences.
As many as you know, the wagons in India generally are not shared. Men travel in ones reserverd for them while women, do it in others.
Sweltering heat, overcrowding, stinks, sweats...In summary, the London tube at rush hour in comparison is delightful.
But the icing on the cake is in the diffuse boundary that separates the women's from the men's wagon. If by any chance you have the misfortune to fall into the black hole (first cousin of the renamed black hole that marked the old fort William), get ready to understand what is meant by a fully ten-sided body search.

On the other hand, Belgachia area is full of colorful street markets where vegetables and fruits lie comfortably on the floor feeding the local pests. This is how in Kolkata, the cycle of life continues.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

As background, a harmonious symphony of horns dance in the air as locals (rather more grumpy than in my dear Sudder Street), make their way to work through shoving and honking.
I won't lie to you, there is not much to see in Belgachia despite my pretentious narrative.
As soon as you leave behind the metro station, the first slums dotted around a rickety train tracks begin to appear.
Furthermore, we find some practically exhausted grazing areas where ugly cows and sheep are vying for the last stubble and where abandoned bus fleets throng to both sides of Hugly river (tributary of the Ganges), which is more dirty and infected (even though it seems impossible) than the rest of the Ganges itself, classified not by chance, as the most polluted river in the world.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The Digambar Shree Parasnath Jain Temple is probably one of the few architectural attractions inthe area. I can't say that it is visually impressive, but after so much dirt, dust and slums, I conceived it as a haven of rest in the middle of a decaying neigborhood.

Moreover, as I was not acquainted with Jain religion, the visit was quite instructive thanks to a great devote that I found giving wreaths in memory of any deity.
As a curious fact, the Jain temples reserve the right to deny access to all those who come in with leather stuff and women with their period, but as I couldn't find any security matriarch for the "gypsy handkerchief test", I had no other option than to entrust the infinite forgiveness of Mahavirá.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

An essential part of Kolkata are people with whom you share your experience and in turn, those who decide to share theirs with you.
People with whom I ended up establishing bonds of friendship that I will drag with me while there is a way to go.
And that is the most valuable lesson that the city gave me, which is the same conclusion that Chris McCandless reached at the end of the film "Happiness is only real when shared", because it's not the same thing learning to be alone than living in solitude.
This is how Kolkata teaches you that even the most absolute filth or the Nothing are shared as motor stimulus to keep on living.
Hence the caresses, so fundamentals.
Caresses as warm conversations with massala chai aroma, or a simple touch of hands that remind us that we're not alone to face the fight.
For that and more, I couldn't fail to express my sincere gratitude and remember all those who were there, my mates, the Indians who supported me at some point during my journey, the Indian women in general as an example of strength and courage in a society where prejudices and discrimination are specially present. Among them, I would like to point out an anonymous face who despite putting herself in danger, freed me from a very complicated situation.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Equally notable isthe voluntary project carried out by Urmi Basu "The woman par excellence" commited the children and women of the Red Light District in her active struggle against sexual exploitation and achieving better living conditions for this deprived district.
Thanks to all of them, I learned to cope with which shouldn't be assimilated and even less, normalised.
A ragged girl without seeming old enough to even be menstruating, grab your arm while breast feeding a baby, or people suffering from leprosy or other serious illnesses are forced to crawl on the floor like animals to beg a paltry rupees or teenage mothers (younger than I was), with no choice but to leave their children wandering in the street while they prostitute themselves.

However, I realized that after the first week, the uneasiness that until then had made me filter the most atrocious calamities, had abandoned me.
According to some, it is that moment in which you are aware that your senses are drugged, when you redirect your experience towards voluntary activities.
In your heart of hearts, you know you're faced with an inmutable reality that requires the effort of the whole world and everyone in this case, especially concern to oneself.
That's why one should try to take care of oneself in order not to en up spoilt.
We should be first and foremost humans to remember who we are and discover what we have come to do.
For though at first there is no clear objective, Kolkata does not catch you in vain. If it holds you, it makes you get involved giving you several good reasons.

3.The virtue of doing it: Missionaries of Charity and Urmi Basu’s New Light Project.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

That's how I finally decided to skip forward...or to fall.
Beats me! if I don't even remember it well.
Anyway, I gathered momentum to go into that land, where "affection" and "will" ignite and explode, leaving a deep vacuum behind the smokescreen.
A unique opportunity to savor for yourself the well-known descent along the rabbit hole, with no other requirement than daring to feel it.
And when I have already bottomed out, I drank all the bottles, which make you turn into a giant and negligibly small, without even looking askance at the label.
All that remains was to live beyond the gallops to the bathroom, the puddles of sweat in the cleavage, armpits and other parts of the body where sweat was never thought to be possible. Even beyond the squabbles with taxi drivers and the massive cockroaches that enjoyed scampering between clothing or crockery.

Mother's House is the former Home of Mother Teresa and seat, so to speak, of the Missionaries of Charity. It's a large building with its own chapel where many volunteers go to work on different projects.
From Sudder Street it is easily reached through the Muslim quarter, which for me was an experience in itself.
By then, I had already normalized that people had a portuguese wash in the middle of the road, therefore, I found a real attraction in the spiritual practices and culinary resources of the district.
In the middle of nowhere, people had erected a sort of improvised mosque (or rather a construction of the same) in which there is a "txosna" style bar, where they shared the healthy habit of closing prayer with a round of shots of any sort of liquor. According to them, there was a reasonable explanation for the phenomenan of "not giving a fuck about the doctrine".
The culprits, parasites of meat. But I wasn't convinced at all, because once they drank the first, the second and the third soon followed.
Moreover, there were butchers. The most profitable business (if it was not the unique), cutting up bodies which were clearly beef.
Where those the same sick and ugly cows that roamed between dumps in the Hindu areas? I think that's one of those existential questions that will accompany me forever and ever.

*Txosna: it's an improvised tavern built to provide alcoholic beverages during the regional parties in Basque Country.

Ahora bien, si Jesús is the bread of life, entonces me callo.

Mother's House, its project management and methodology employed where, in my opinion, somewhat divergent in relation to the information provided by the center and the many people who endorsed it, both people who had the occasion to know the place personally and those who not.
According to my personal experience, I can say that I only saw those famous sisters the first day when choosing a project.
They were writing reports filling out papers, or simply devoted to the pleasure or riding.
But since the dining room was the only place I met with them before going to Sishu Bhavanorphanage to work, apparently, they were also engaged in distributing breakfast (or eating the leftovers later, given their remarkable weight).
It seems that the addiction to charity, especially that habit of picking people off the street that motivated Mother Teresa according to some sources, should have disappeared with her, because I doubt that her order of successor novices were engaged in such duties with their always nuclear white-colored saris. Or maybe the neighborhood laundry is like rain in Arica province, pure wonder.
From what I could see, the team of people responsible for caring and treating children (some of them with physical and mental disabilities) was reduced to "massis", Indian women who were paid by the sisters in order to perform these tasks for them with the group pf volunteers.
Even though I tried to stay receptive and not allow my Western vision to come between my principles and my work, I never got to work out why this rough treatment by the massis, from how to suppress the urge to play of the children to how the procedures used to feed them, the absence of contact and the lack of affection in general.
In my opinion, I understand that even in the case of a religious centre, priority should be given to rehabilitation and appropiate treatment of children instead of so many mass at any time of the day in every imaginable language.
That said, if Jesus is the bread of life, then I'll shut up.

Meanwhile, most of my fellow spoke wonders about their experience in the project of one Indian NGO called New Light (http://www.newlightindia.org/), which eventually seduced me and pushed me to know it.

During my stay in 2009, New Light was composed of three reception centres for minors: Creche-cum shelter, Dalit shelter and Soma Home. These centers were located in different places of the city, all of them, focused on providing new perspectives and options for children of sex workers in the Red Light District of Kalighat or untouchables (also called dalits), offering a safe place, medical and legal care, education and three regular meals a day.
The social worker Urmi Basu, is the director of the organization and responsible with her team of driving it forward, shaping an ambitious community development program, which contributes not only helping these children, but also making their mothers aware of their own and their childrens rights and taking preventive measures against abuse and venereal diseases, especially HIV and Hepatitis B, two of which are common in the area.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

• Creche-cum shelter or New Light II as volunteers knew it, is the biggest of the centres having around 150 children of the Red Light District.
The center arose because of the need to keep them off the streets and where their mothers were prostituting.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

•  Dalit shelter or New Light I, is a multifunctional haven for children of the Dalit community.
Dalits, (for those unfamiliar with traditional Hindu beliefs) are the victims of a caste society that although it is assumed to be abolished, is still present in ruaral areas and private circles.
Dalits are not part of any of the four varnas which includes the Hindu religion, which means that they're not created by any part of Purusha's body (for fuck's sake), which condemn to an exclusive and discriminatory social rank, without access to education or health care, or to a different social status limiting the type of professions they can play and even marriages they can aspire, being always exposed to violent attacks such as lynchings, rapes and murders.

The center is located behind the crematorium of Kerotala, an area integrated by Doms, a class of Dalits also known as "untouchables" for engaging in burning corpses.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

• The southern Soma Home, is a centre focused on young girls and teenage girls who have been removed from Red Light District of Kalighat with the consent of their mothers for being at risk and may be victims of abuse or sexual slavery.

Because a girl can get to sell for 250,000 rupees, about $3,000 and considering that many people live on less than $3 a day, the danger is considerable.

4.Round trip ticket to Orissa: Hey! Ho! Let’s go!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

That last night before leaving to the State of Orissa, I looked in the mirror of what would be my last room in Kolkata.
I'd never seen myself so naked up to then and yet, remained dressed.
I climbed to the top floor to say goodbye to Momo, a boy of about ten years of age in charge of the most tedious tasks in the guest house.
Momo was scampering around the rooftop to and fro as if the clock had not been enough for him. When he saw me, he gave me a mischievous smile, the same that he wore when slipped in through doorways half closed with the cheap excuse of taking a quick look to see if there was soiled clothing for cleaning.
After, I met up with my colleagues to close with a few beers the starry night which sensed through the dense cover of pollution.

The sun rose next morning so exhausted that we didn't feel it coming.
What woke us up was nothing but an intruder which had slipped through the window of the building going directly to our room, decorated by the way, with a cast of thongs hanging from rows os strings as Buddhist prayer flags.
"Painting, painting!!!" Seemed to be the maxim of that man.
We couldn't believe our eyes and therefore we weren't bright enough, only our mate Leticia reacted like a spring from the bed "tell him NO, NO PAINTING!!!"
Probably, he was more scared than us. It was only a poor man who had been given the task of painting the exterior balcony light blue, and as a tool, what had been given to him was a miserable rag as a brush and whose intention was no other than to ask for some water to dilute the paint.
Shortly after, already dressed and with a light hand luggage, we headed to New Light to pick up the group of children which accompanied us with Urmi and a few massis to the train station, heading to the State of Orissa.

Return train ticket: Kolkata-Puri / Puri – Kolkata
Precio: RS 600/7euros aprox.
Distancia y duración: 500km aprox. 7 horas.

Encantador.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The train ride is a poem itself but absolutely essential for those wanting to live one of the most genuine experiences offered by the country, as well as being the most effective way to move around the Asian giant.

Return train ticket: Kolkata-Puri / Puri – Kolkata
Price: RS 600/$9 approx.
Distance and duration: 500km approx. 7 hours.
We travelled in "Sleeper Class" what would be an intermediate class between the three existing classes, focused on long-distance journeys.
In short, our wagon had spartan bunk beds for the night, small ceilling fans installed (which make you freeze to death), and also, the ensuing mob of people, which seems to come standard with the wagon, crammed into their compartments.
Regarding the toilet, my vocabulary range is insufficient to express the sensation caused at first sight.
Its appearance could be classified as anything but Asian luxury, so my only advide is to avoid it, to put it bluntly.
But if the day before you couldn't help but dive into some delight tikka masala, get ready to cross the threshold of death arcades protected by a diving suit or a Sahrawi headscarf at the very least (as indeed I did).
Once inside, may the incessant rattle and the force be with you. Your mission will be to hit without being caressed by any element related to the stinking hole, dug into the putrid floorboards while the tracks are passing by down your feet. Wonderful!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

But, as Murphy's Laws go and also the classic "why everything happen to me?" during the night, my children Rakesh, Akash and I, that were travelling in the same compartment, we could rely on the presence of guest start appearances as a syphilitic travestite who tried to scratch me by not receiving the desired alms, or also, two passionate lovebirds who decided to arrange a furtive encounter inside our compartment, becoming the vacant bunk bed below in their sodomite love nest. (Let us to recall that until that year, any kind of sexual contact considered a "deviant behaviour" was severy punished).

Puri is a small town regarded as holy. It's located about 65km from Bhubaneswar, the State capital of Orissa, bathed by the muddy and polluted waters of the coast of the Bay of Bengal, at the mouth of the Ganges.
Through Puri is built, most of the villages located in this coastal area are extremely poor and they basically consist on quite precarious shacks withouth access to drinking water or electricity and exclusively equipped with wood-burning adobe kitchens.
But what really caught my attention was the fact that they had left the slum style construction based on masses of tin and plastic by other type of shanty dwellings using palm leaves and bamboo plants available.
Taking into account the inexorable monsoon season and its torrential rains, I'm not sure if that change implied a real improvement.
Moreover, my first impression (unlike the one Kolkata gave me) was a notable decrease in the number of beggars.
Nobody had plenty of nothing but there at least, the same ragged children crying from hunger in Kolkata, seemed to have one piece of fish to put in their mouth,
Anyway, mine was just an impressions, it would be a matter of asking families in order to have a more realistic view.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The inhabitants of the region live and breathe for the sea, building their lives around the beach.
There is where men go fishing in small boats, and where women, bid to get a good prince for fresh fish to take home as sustenance and where they will win if they're lucky enough, a few rupees by selling their surplus.
It is only in the beach, where children run unaware of the precariousness in which they live, or where young people queue to ride in a balloon pulled by the jeep of a local wealthy or just for a simple camel ride.

• As a side note, I would like to point out that "nakedness" and by that I mean not full nudity but the simple fact of wearing a bikini, it's something that is frowned upon to the point of being offensive, especially for those who aren't tourist.
Many Hindus are quite conservative and certainly misogynist in various aspects, so if we want to have a comfortable experience without any incident, every woman should bathe with "appropiate clothing". For them, this translates into a shirt and pants which go down to the knee at least.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

To date, many of New Light project children, hadn't seen the sea in their lives, in fact, they hadn't even had the opportunity to leave Kolkata.
Therefore, Puri was for them and for us too, an exotic cocktail of extraordinary moments to remember forever.

 (Volunteer) Which is the purpose of having an assitant? Is it true that the couple required
   her to hold the woman while performing difficult positions?
-
(Our guide) A what? Of course not!!! It was used to help the man holding his testicles.
-
(Volunteer) And what about the hand-carved horses at the bottom of the wall?
-
(Our guide) Not interesting.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

During those days, we also had the chance to visit the Sun Temple of Konark as a cultural outing.
The temple is considered World Heritage Site being one of the most representative monuments of the country for its architecture and bas-reliefs which decorate its walls with erotic themes basically.
Like most representative things in India, the temple is surrounded by a halo of mysticism enclosing various legends that have emerged over the years.
One of them says that the first temple erected in Konark was an offering of prince Samba, son of Krishna.
In its time, the good-looking Samba, had been due to ridicule a deity mocking about his uglyness and, in revenge, the deity revealed to Samba a secret place where women bathed naked in the river.
Although at first they have nothing in common with what is understood by a punishment by rather by the dream of every teenager, it's important to note that those women, were part of the 16,108 wenches that made up the harem of his father Krishna. So when Samba was discovered, Krishna gave him leprosy in return.
As much as Samba tried to prove that he had been manipulated, he had not choice but keeping the short straw.
Samba spent the next twelve years practically doing penance in the north of Puri, becoming a real pest for the deity Suria, who finally removed the curse (probably to get rid of him).
So now, hindus hope that if they bathe facing the temple during sunset, they'll remove any skin condition, including leprosy.
But I will advance, just watching the water color, that's not going to happen.

Admission for foreigners was about $4(RS 250) in 2009, and $0,16(RS 10) for the indians.
I want to think that the disproportionate rate to the stranger had a reasonable explanation such as any kind of special bonus because of the constant prayer calls.
When we finally got to set foot within the vicinity, we were divided into two groups. Children were assigned a guide and a tour, whereas we were assigned another.
I never got to understand why we were urged to take the kids to visit the erotic temple if they were getting a skewed and distorted impression.
Nor I got to see how a culture capable of writing on a period from 250 A.D - 500 A.D as detailed text as Kamasutra, is unable today, some 1,600 years later, to normalize sexuality without experiencing an excessive shyness and control, not only personal relationships or signs of public affection, but also the way people must dress. Ridiculous.
Meanwhile, our guide got on top by seeing that he had a good chance to let his hair down with a group of foreigners. So he tould us with excitement, every sexual positions while diverting our attention from anything else that didn't have directly something to do with his speech.
I specially remember a couple of answers to our questions:

- (Volunteer) Which is the purpose of having an assistant? It is true that the couple required her to hold the woman while performing difficult positions?
- (Our guide) A what? Of course not! She was used to help the man holding his testicles.
- (Volunteer) And what about the hand-carved horses at the bottom of the wall?
- (Our guide) Not interesting.

The day before returning to my dear Kolkata, we made our last group excursion.
We called a taxi van and drove about 50km to Ganjam and Khorda districts where we found the famous Chilka Lake. A brackish water lagoon, the largest in India and the second largest in the worldwide.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

This lake offers great fishing resources to the locals as well as being an ecosystem able to house more than 160 types of migratory bird species considered rare and many others endangered.

Anyway, by the time I realized that the boys had organized the boats, we were already furrowing the waters.
Older children enjoyed it lots but like most any could swim, some of the girls and the smaller ones, spent moments of panic between crying and whining until the first Irrawaddy dolphins appeared in the distance, stealing their attention and even their smile.

We refuelled in an almost deserted beach where we loaded batteries through seafood seasoned with spicy and abrasive concoction, which took with it what was left of my already spoiled stomach.
But things can always get worse, my upset stomach was followed by a sharpturn of weather that brought the storm of the century.
Despite the huge size of the cloud, I was pretty quiet, attributing all kinds of weather events to the typical monsoon rains that as fast as they come, they fade away.
After all, what's the worst that could happen in a lake? an accidental splash?
But as if it was a rowing race, I began to see local people crammed into small barges fleeing in panic from neighboring beaches.
So as soon as we got ready to leave, I realized that the dissonant notes of the staff were two "massis", which instead of helping to board the children, had already secured their own arses in the style of "Runaway Bride" while Urmi, boatmen and volunteers were still trying to arrange the return.

Being our last night, we decided to organize a special dinner taking the kids with us to a local restaurant in order to make them try different flavours than they used to open up their minds.
At first, some of them showed suspicion and even fear of the unknown merely ordering their daily dishes with the exception of some corageous souls.
So finally, we were who ordered an assortment of specialities to push them to try. It was wonderful to see them excited to discover a world of new flavours.
As side note,I was surprised to see that most of them were not keen on sweet desserts, by which any western kid had gone mad such as mango lassis, chocolate shakes, strawberry milkshakes... so I guess it will be a matter of palates and dietary habits, the same thing that happens to us with their delirious dose of spices.
As soon as we finished, we realized that the younger kids had fallen asleep one after another on the tables.

Time’s up!

We dedicate the following day to squeeze moments before leaving for Kolkata.
As humans, we are certainly greedy beasts, hungry for good times and life experiences, especially when sensing an edpoint. Time's up!
And remember to close the door behind you, please.
That's why we were silent, letting the hours go by counterclockwise while our group of infants rushed to the station.

5. Back to the Ghetto: New Light’s Final Performance and Latest inquiries about what’s going on in the “City of joy”

The last days in Kolkata went fast. Too fast to realize that august was about to do something crazy.
For some time now, it had been  threatening to jump out the window of Gulistan (our guest house in Sudder Street) until he finally did it. He had no choice but to explode in flowers that flooded the neighboring market in the form of a farewell.
During those days and after the preceding rehearsals, the children of the New Light along with the volunteers, were completing preparations for their final performance: "Once upon a time there was a circus".
It was a programme carried out by the NGO Mundo Cooperante, which consisted on a multidisciplinary show performed in a local theatre, where the three centers involved played different roles in a stage, danced Bollywood choreographies, did acrobatics and where the smaller ones found their own place singing songs.
Finally, the awaited day arrived, the stage was covered with sets in which we had been working with dalit children, to which the colorful makeups and costumes were added. Children wore anxiously awaiting the time of staging.

VIDEO: NEW LIGHT '09 (KOLKATA - ORISSA, INDIA)

The next day the first goodbyes took place, and during the following days the rest of the volunteers were gone too.
I've never liked absences that leave cracks, especially those that leave these gaps through trickery, without you noticing.
But it is said that's how beautiful things are born, suddenly.
Although they could bring at least a pot of "polyfilla", to facilitate quick and painless repairs.
In fact, the return date was during last days warning of its arrival to put the blame on the time, and I couldn't do anything but await that these day reached me to the full.
And so, my backpack still remained full of fears, of "just in cases" that I had to get rid of quickly, leaving behind all that weight (shoes, clothes, shampoos,etc). After a month and a half, I was so hardened that I could haggle anyone to death, so up to three Indian smiles for each item got to achieve.

6. Next plane home: A final thought

Aquella mañana me desperté temprano.
